The American Indian population WAS concentrated in the East / West coastal states and Southwest; Southeast, South Gulf Coast, etc. The interior plains were sparsely populated by American Indians. Minimal contact (in the 16th century) with European traders (even before the arrival of settlers) caused a mass die off of American Indians. The traders arrived on the coast and traveled inland. By the time the English and French colonialists arrived, the American Indians were already in in a very weakened situation when the first settlers began expanding their settlements. This was a big factor in their eviction by the Europeans. This is true for South and North America. Disease was the greatest weapon the Conquistadors used - inadvertendly at first then they took advantage of it and encouraged its spread. This all happened long before the US existed as a country. Of course the US did a good job rolling up the survivors. By the time Andrew Jackson sent out his smallpox blankets, their population had been reduced 90% from the 15th century levels. flw www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
