An "occupation of Iraq could cause chaos and result in the collapse of the war on terror, especially when another force is still occupying the Palestinian territories," said Al-Watan. "It would unify those opposed to US policy in the region. It may even draw Arab and Muslim moderates to their side," it said in an editorial. "US occupation of Iraq would not put an end to violence. It would rather increase it by creating a larger opposition ... so long as the United States does not force Israel to withdraw." The semi-official paper charged that Washington's main goal in occupying Iraq would not be to get rid of weapons of mass destruction but to "control oil as a strategic commodity." US Secretary of State Colin Powell confirmed yesterday that Washington was mulling the possibility of installing a military occupation government in Baghdad, one of several contingency plans being worked on as US officials prepare for a possible invasion to oust President Hussein and install a friendly government in the oil-rich country. "Should it come to that - and the president hopes that it does not come to that, but should it come that - we would have an obligation to put in place a better regime," Powell said in an interview with National Public Radio. "We are obviously doing contingency planning and there are lots of different models from history that one could look at: Japan, Germany," Powell said. Al-Riyadh newspaper also warned that a US-led offensive against Iraq could lead to the country's partition and eventually destabilise other states, including Iran and Turkey. Turkish Prime Minister Minister Bulent Ecevit has warned the US not to support Kurdish nationalists in Iraq, saying that Turkey would intervene to protect its interests. Turkey has brutally suppressed its Kurdish nationalist movement, a campaign that has cost at least 30,000 lives since 1984. It is concerned that Iraqi Kurds may attempt to set up a Kurdish state in the north if Hussein was overthrown, a move which may further inflame nationalist aspirations in Turkey.
