GOP LOBBY TARGETED WELLSTONE WITH TOMBSTONE AD How Low Has The GOP Gone: Just Look "Offensive Before, Despicable Now" GOP Smear Machine Up And Running Before Wellstone Even Buried It's Not Decent: It's Republican In one of the lowest pieces of negative campaigning in this campaign year, a pro- Republican right- wing business lobby, the National Federation of Independent Businesses, targeted Senator Paul Wellstone with a ghastly, offensive ad, featuring a tombstone and an open burial vault, that charged Wellstone with trying to tax the dead. Of course, Wellstone favored nothing of the kind. He favored stopping the abolition of the federal estate tax -- a old radical right wing abolition measure, now backed by George W. Bush and the GOP, that promises to bring a windfall for the rich at the direct expense of ordinary taxpayers. With Gingrichian word-play, the Republican right wing has taken to smearing the estate tax -- a measure once backed heartily by Republicans all the way back to Teddy Roosevelt -- as the "death tax." And hence this pretext for this disgusting anti-Wellstone propaganda. "Tell Paul Wellstone His Votes Are Killing You," screamed the tasteless, mendacious flyer, which began arriving at some 30,000 Minnesota businesses late last week. This filth, scurrilous enough when Wellstone was alive, is positively obscene in the wake of his tragic death. And yet, NFIB senior vice president Dennis Whitfield actually DEFENDED the ad, on the grounds that "it is necessary to draw a distinction between the candidates' stances on issues." Whitfield merely regretted the timing of the direct-mail piece, then went on to praise Wellstone with crocodile tears as a man of commitment and integrity. Does Mr. Whitfield seriously expect anyone to believe that, even before Wellstone's death, his ad was anything other than a ghoulish, disgusting smear. Drawing distinctions? This is how Joe McCarthy drew distinctions -- with lies and fear. And does Mr. Whitfield really expect anyone to believe that he sincerely had any respect whatsoever for a man, now dead, whom his operation smeared so viciously when he was alive? But this isn't just about the fallen Paul Wellstone, and one horrifying ad. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND ITS CORPORATE BACKERS HAVE BEEN RUNNING ADS JUST AS OFFENSIVE AND FALSE AND MEAN AS THIS ONE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, TARGETING DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES MWO has been reporting it. But the Media Whores refuse to say a peep. They just prefer to let it come in under their radar. Bad timing, Mr. Whitfield? No. Bad morals, Mr. Whitfield. Yours. And those of the rest of the GOP racket boys who will say anything and do anything to seize power for themselves and the rich special interests. Had enough?
