"HERBICIDE DOUSES U.S. SENATOR U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-MN), one of

fact-finding delegation to Colombia. While watching the Colombian
National Police demonstrate its fumigation of coca plants, Wellstone
and other members of his delegation were hit with a fine spray of the
herbicide glyphosate from a helicopter flying less than 200 feet above
them. Wellstone reportedly joked about the incident, but delegation

defense

United Missile Defense Company (UMDC), a joint venture equally owned

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. senators
were warned earlier this week that
those who play golf may be targets of
al Qaeda snipers on golf courses and
were given tips on how to protect
themselves, a U.S. Capitol Police
spokeswoman said.
Police were notified about the potential
threat to senators, said Marcia Krug, a
Capitol Police spokeswoman. She would
not say which agency notified the Capitol
Police or when exactly they were told.
But she said her department, in turn, notified
the sergeant-at-arms, who then notified the
senators that al Qaeda snipers might be
looming near golf courses, ready to pick
them off.
The sergeant-at-arms, who is in charge of
lawmakers' security, did suggest precautions the senators should take,
Krug said. She would not elaborate.
The threat information was passed as a sniper, who has killed nine
people and wounded two others in the Washington area, remains at
large. Authorities investigating that case have said there is no
evidence suggesting that a sniper working for a terrorist group is
behind the shootings.
Meanwhile, FBI agents have been questioning an al Qaeda suspect being
held in Belgium who bragged to his interrogators that he had witnessed
al Qaeda training for snipers, European intelligence sources said
Friday.
The FBI, one of many agencies involved in the Washington-area sniper
shooting investigation, refused to confirm or deny it had sent agents
to Brussels. Nizar Trabelsi has been in custody since two days after
the September 11 terror attacks in the United States, accused of
plotting a suicide bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Paris. Trabelsi,
who confessed to the plot in December, is interrogated regularly. FBI
investigators have interviewed Trabelsi within the last two or three
days, the European intelligence sources told CNN. The sources said
Trabelsi told investigators of a plan in which snipers would attack
American senators on a golf course, and described how fighters were
trained to shoot targets from up to 250 meters (820 feet) and shoot
from the back of pickup trucks.
Belgian investigators reacted skeptically to any suggestion of a link
with the D.C.-area shootings that began October 2, noting the suspect
has had access to newspaper and TV accounts of the spree. In addition,
they said, disinformation is a key al Qaeda tactic. As a member of
the north African Salafist terrorist group, affiliated with al Qaeda,
Trabelsi embraces the doctrine of continuing the jihad struggle by
deception of the enemy. Belgian investigators say his interrogations
have been consistent with this doctrine.
Investigators have recently been questioning Guantanamo Bay detainees
about snipers, but Trabelsi was not subject to this. Belgian sources
tell CNN he volunteered the topic of his own accord.

Dear Mr. President:
We write to express our profound concern and dismay at the news of yet
another suicide bombing in Jerusalem-killing three and wounding more
than 50 -- even as General Zinni is on the ground in the region trying
to bring both parties together for cease-fire negotiations.
Chairman Arafat made a commitment at Oslo to settle all differences
between Palestinians and Israelis peacefully and to renounce the use
of terrorism and other acts of violence. Yet even today the Al Aqsa
Martyrs Brigades, the military wing of Mr. Arafat's own Fatah
movement, are engaged in acts of violence and terrorism. It is
especially disappointing to us that this bombing-the second in two
days-comes just at a time that Vice President Cheney had offered to
meet with Mr. Arafat and that General Zinni had returned to the region
to seek to bring both sides together to implement the Tenet Plan. Yet
there is no evidence, on the ground, that Mr. Arafat is willing to do
what is necessary to help bring peace to Israel and his people. Mr.
Arafat must live up to his pledge at Oslo and demonstrate that he is a
genuine partner for peace.
We strongly believe that Chairman Arafat must take decisive and
concerted action to rein in the terrorists and put and end to their
brutal campaign-and must demonstrate, on the ground, that he is
willing to take the steps necessary to bring the violence to an end.
Until Mr. Arafat and the Palestinian Authority demonstrate a
commitment, in word and deed, to control the violence and do
everything they can to stop it, we believe that Israel, a democratic
state and a staunch friend and ally of the United States, is strongly
within its rights to take necessary and appropriate measures to assure
the security of its people.
Until Mr. Arafat and the Palestinian Authority demonstrate their
commitment to end the violence we would urge that the Vice President
reconsider his offer to meet with Mr. Arafat. And although we believe
that it is critical that General Zinni remain in the region, we hope
that he makes clear that the United States will not deal with those
who do not live up to their commitments.We look forward to your

Who would have guessed that the hopes of both major parties in the
midterm elections would hinge on one man: Senator Paul Wellstone of
Minnesota? Wellstone, who is generally viewed by the Washington
establishment as an outr� 60s-radical type, is in the race of his life
for reelection this fall. The most liberal member of the Senate, where
the Democrats hold a one-seat majority, is in a neck-and-neck contest
with President Bush's hand-picked candidate, Norm Coleman, the
party-switching former mayor of St. Paul. Bush and Vice President
Cheney intervened to make sure Coleman would not face a primary
challenge, and they are now aggressively campaigning to help Coleman
push Wellstone out.To make matters more interesting, the Minnesota
Greens have fielded their own candidate in the Senate race, Ed "Eagle
Man" McGaa, an author of popular books on Native American spirituality
and ecology, and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean and Vietnam
wars. In Minnesota, the Greens might determine the outcome. Ed McGaa
won the Minnesota Green Party endorsement, with a two-thirds majority,
despite an effort by their former Vice Presidential candidate Winona
LaDuke and others to get the party to forego a Senate race against
Wellstone. At the Minnesota Green Party convention, the "none of the
above" option for Senate got less than 12 percent of the vote.The
Democrats put so much negative pressure on the Greens not to run a
candidate in Wellstone's race, says Green spokesperson Holle Brian,
that the Greens got mad. "People came to the convention with the goal
of endorsing a candidate come hell or high water," she says. There was
already a fair amount of grumbling in Minnesota over Wellstone's votes
authorizing Bush's military response to the terrorist attacks of
September 11, as well as past votes supporting military actions in
Iraq. Ed McGaa remains proud of his 110 combat missions in Vietnam and
is still a staunch anti-communist McGaa has also stirred up some
controversy for accusing Wellstone of being "more loyal to Israel than
he is to the United States"-a statement Wellstone supporters and some
Greens view as anti-Semitic. As for the possibility that his candidacy
might tip the scales in the Senate, McGaa is perhaps the only person
involved in the hotly contested Minnesota race who hasn't given it
much thought. Ed used to hunt deer, lasted as a vegetarian for less
than a week."
