Bali Bonus for Oz
Government by Hero Cee

The Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard, owes his
position to acts of barbaric terrorism. In July 2001, all opinion polls
had him and his Liberal Party trailing way behind Kim Beasley, then leader
of the opposition Labour Party. And with an election scheduled for the
following November, the Liberal Party were preparing themselves for
failure. Australia was suffering badly from the economic debacle of the
Goods and Services Tax introduced by the Liberals in 2000. After one year
of GST, over 60 percent of small business had gone bankrupt. Consumers
struggled to deal with massive increases in the cost of groceries. The
government had inflicted a crippling blow to the economy and was destined
to pay the price at the polls. By July 2001, it was a foregone conclusion
that the Labour Party would win the November federal election, bringing in
a new Prime Minister, Kim Beasley. Even conservative newspapers considered
this to be a fait accompli, speculating only on the size of the predicted
Labour win. Then, hey, presto, John Howard had the most amazing stroke of
luck.
On September 9, 2001, John Howard was in Washington D.C. as
part of a state visit to his pal, President Bush, Jr. Caught up in the
mayhem of that dreadful day, the Australian entourage watched first hand
the destruction of the Pentagon building. Arriving home to a hero’s
welcome, John Howard’s popularity soared. In the following weeks, he
shrewdly hitched onto the coattails of President Bush Jr.’s War on Terror
and never looked back. Along with some clever chicanery involving (now
proven to be) false allegations of illegal immigrants tossing their
children into the sea, John Howard led the Liberal Party to a resounding
victory in the November 2001 elections.
However, the honeymoon was
short lived. Video footage soon established that the aforementioned
immigrants tossed their children into the sea because their boat was
sinking. Australians by now were openly questioning John Howard’s
unequivocal support of America, particularly at the same time that the
U.S. was imposing massive trade sanctions against our steel and wheat
industry. Australians are extremely pissed off that the United States has
crippled our steel industry, yet at the same time demands that we join
them in the War on Terror. Americans don’t seem to understand this. The
distinct feeling in Oz is that America assumes as its right, that we
should bow down to them while they ride roughshod over our industry.
By October 2002, John Howard was facing increasing opposition to
his vehement support for President Bush, Jr. Most Australians did not want
to be a part of a war in Iraq. We did not see the connection between this
and the events of September 9, 2001. We had noted with dismay the
continuous way in which the United States shifts the goal posts. First it
was Osama bin Laden. Now the threat was from Iraq, with North Korea and
Syria lurking in the wings. Even Saudi Arabia has been mentioned as a ‘no
longer friendly’ state. Get Real! Despite all the media hype, Australians
just weren’t buying this one.
Something was needed to turn around
this attitude; to bring Oz into line with the United States. The events of
October 12, ‘02, in Bali did just that. The media frenzy has numbed Oz
into submission. Americans went through the same thing after 9/11. A
continuous barrage of the most horrible images and stories has worn down
our critical perception. And John Howard wins again. In the wake of the
Bali bombings, his popularity has skyrocketed to an unprecedented 62%.
Clearly THEY have done their homework well. Hot on the heels of
Bali, we witnessed the gunning down of Dr Margaret Tobin, head of the
South Australian department of mental health. Days later, a crazed lone
gunman shot dead two students at Melbourne’s Monash University.
Immediately, John Howard announced plans to make it illegal to own
semi-automatic handguns in Australia. The outcry has been enormous from
across the board. Police, politicians, farmers, sporting shooters and
general concerned citizens are vehemently opposed. Yet, John Howard is
plowing on. But it doesn’t stop there. He’s on a roll. His game plan is to
steamroll in so many changes at once that we can’t possibly fight them
all.
Here’s where it gets frightening. The government now wishes
to rush through new anti-terrorism laws which would give them wide ranging
emergency powers over us citizens. These laws are almost identical to
those fostered on our hapless American friends by their government after
9/11. But we have the added sting in that the government is also trying to
totally disarm us at the same time. Doesn’t make sense does it? On the one
hand they say that we face a very real threat from Terrorists, presumably
of external origin. On the other hand, they send our armed forces overseas
and take away our last hope of defending ourselves. And they expect us to
believe this bullshit!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It's only hours since I wrote that piece & already John Howard
has said he will ban all semi-automatic handguns in Oz except police,
security & Olympic shooters. Jees (sorry) that means all of us have to
surrender our guns. Over My Dead Body! Holy Hell guys, this is really
happening right now. There's gonna be a rebellion this time.
