-Caveat Lector-
Phases of Uncertainty
by Victor Thorn

All of us at one time or another wonder whether what we’re doing in life has any meaning or purpose. We make certain decisions and follow a distinct path, but somewhere along the line we question what it all means. And more often than not, if the results aren’t evident or earth-shatteringly positive, we get discouraged and doubt whether anything is worthwhile or not.

It is during these phases of uncertainty that we all need to step back for a moment and look at the big picture. Once this period of reflection takes place, one of the first things we should remember is that existence is more all-encompassing than what we’re led to believe. Rather than being a one-shot linear deal where we’re born, grow old and die, life continues on through a succession of rebirths (incarnations), constituting a process where we can either grow through positive karmic energy, or digress due to our negative thoughts and actions.

Naturally, all of us would like to better our lot in life and reach the next level of existence, but we become hindered by a form of myopia where we only see what’s occurring in the here-and-now without examining the larger frame of reference. Thus, we can seemingly be doing something positive, but if the results aren’t immediate, we toss-up our hands and dismiss our endeavors as futile. But that’s where we make our biggest mistake. Rather than seeing all the positive strides we’re making in the entirety of existence, we limit ourselves solely to what’s going on NOW without allowing the entirety of possibility make an impact on us.

A perfect example would be a person that wanted to erect a gigantic pyramid which would equal those in Egypt. But rather than having huge multi-ton blocks of stone that the original builders used, he or she was only given rocks the size of a thimble. So they begin this project, and similar to Sisyphus pushing his boulder up a mountain, their progress seems to be halting at best. But they continue on, placing stone-upon-tiny-stone, then finally step back one day and, filled with exasperation, exclaim, “I’m not getting anywhere! What does it matter? This is useless!”

At this stage the individual is faced with a dilemma. Do they throw everything away and simply surrender, or do they continue trying to fulfill their purpose? This crossroads is indicative of the ultimate direction in which the person in question is heading. Those who determine their purpose and pursue it (i.e. those who keep building) will evolve on the grand scale; while the rest will … well … accepting the status quo is the equivalent of resigning yourself to a state of flux … of limbo. Progress is static, not inert, and those who move forward get much farther than those who run in place or tread water.

An even better illustration of someone fulfilling their purpose was Jesus’ crucifixion. At many times during his ministry he could have said, “It’s inevitable that I’m going to die. But why? What good is it going to do?” If Jesus had simply focused on the MOMENT, he probably would have denied God’s Will and not given his life as a ransom for ours. But his realm of knowledge and field of vision was more expansive, and he realized that there was more to the picture than this single instance in time. Thus, he realized his purpose, fulfilled it, and in the process began a phenomenon that changed the world more dramatically than any other.

In the end, think how different life would be on this planet if everyone truly believed that their actions mattered in a substantial way. Rather than shrugging our shoulders with resignation and feeling dejected, every positive deed would beget another because everything counts – EVERYTHING – for what we do does make a difference. We’ve been conditioned for so long to accept defeatism because “that’s the way it’s always been and no one can do anything about it.” But all it takes is a strong belief that every person can take their thimble-full of meaningful activity and start building. Soon, a mighty structure laying a positive foundation for society will result.
