Akhmed Zakayev was arrested in a dawn raid on Wednesday while attending a conference in Copenhagen. Police detained him at his hotel after Russia sent a request through Interpol. "There is a possibility that we will extradite him if a number of demands are fulfilled and we get a guarantee that he will not be subject to the death penalty," Ms Espersen said. Russia still allows the death sentence but has not carried it out since a moratorium in 1996. Mr Zakayev, an aide to the Chechen president, Aslan Maskhadov, is a former actor who lives in exile and is considered a moderate among Chechen guerillas. He has condemned the theatre siege but Russia says he knew of it in advance. It has also accused him of various crimes between 1996 and 1999. Meanwhile, bowing to international pressure, Russia has finally said what gas was used to end the siege. The Health Minister, Yuri Shevchenko, said the gas was based on derivatives of fentanyl, a fast-acting synthetic narcotic of the opiate family Tests on German hostages have showed traces of halothane, another, longer-lasting anaesthetic, pointing to a potent cocktail having been used, because fentanyl wears off quickly. In high doses, fentanyl can cause people to stop breathing and lapse into a coma, while halothane depresses breathing and heart rate. The hostages would also have been at risk of choking on their vomit. Mr Shevchenko said the deaths were caused by the use of the chemical compound on people who had been starved of oxygen, dehydrated, hungry, unable to move adequately and under severe psychological stress.
