-Caveat Lector- Fetzer's two books on the JFK assassination are poorly-organized and difficult to read. In my opinion, they also tie together things that are coincidence or synchronicity. I give him credit for his work but history cannot be reported accurately even by first-hand witnesses. It's just too complicated.

In our "Gonzo Science" capacity as science columnists for the Duluth alternative newsweekly , we prepared to meet and interview UMD Professor Dr. Jim Fetzer about his research specialty, the JFK assassination. Suddenly, word spread that Senator Paul Wellstone had been killed in a plane crash. An atmosphere of shock and grief hung over the city as we proceeded to the rendezvous with Fetzer. It was unclear whether the interview would even proceed under the oppressive and terrible circumstances. Certainly the ironic timing of Wellstone's death suggested some sort of foul play. The election was two weeks away with the fate of the Senate in the balance. Wellstone had only nudged ahead in the polls the week before. Only in the preceding couple of days had he managed to raise more money than the challenger Norm Coleman. When Fetzer arrived for the interview he said, "You heard about Wellstone? I'm very suspicious. It's going to take a lot to convince me this wasn't a setup by the Bush administration." Gonzo Science suggested that it could have been - rather than a government sponsored assassination - something more like a pro-life airplane mechanic. The Fetzer interview proceeded as planned. During our wide-ranging discussion, Fetzer received a phone call from his wife, who had a news update about the still-smoldering crash site. She also floated the first hint of a rumor that Walter "Fritz" Mondale might step in and take Wellstone's place. What follows is the portion of the interview transcript where we discussed the Wellstone situation. It contains Fetzer's remarkable prediction about the lack of a cockpit voice recorder, or "black box," on board Wellstone's airplane. Fetzer: ... Norm Coleman cannot beat Fritz Mondale. Norm Coleman could not beat Paul Wellstone. I don't know who the fuck Norm Coleman could beat, but it's not any living, breathing, principled DFL'er [Minnesota Democrat], I'll tell you right now. So, I say, fuck, I'm breathing better right now, just for hearing that Mondale might be the deal. Gonzo Science: I can't believe just the irony of coming to talk to you about conspiracy theories and JFK and stuff, and then to have Wellstone drop out of the sky like that. Fetzer: Oh fuck, I know it man; I mean listen, I'm not taking anything for granted here. There's a conservative professor of political science I like a lot ... he was walking out there as I was coming in; he (asked) had I heard? And without finishing the second of course I said, "I want to know how this happened," and he said, "You're kidding me." And I said, "No. I want to know. It's a hell of a fucking coincidence." It's ridiculous. I gotta know! You gotta find out ... they can't even get to the plane yet, it's in such a remote area, and there's so many trees and bushes and all this shit, you know, I mean, I don't know how they already know everyone's dead. I just suppose there's no signs of life. But I'm extremely suspicious. Gonzo Science: Yeah, I'll be very interested to hear what the black box has to say. Fetzer: Oh yeah. I predict: there's just not going to have been a black box on that plane - [sarcastically] "Isn't that fucking amazing! No fucking black box!"
