November 12, 2002 Jordanian troops round up Muslim militants >From Rana Sabbagh in Amman A CRACKDOWN by Jordanian special forces on Muslim extremists in the desert town of Maan yesterday risked triggering more unrest among the country�s pro-Iraqi population. Hundreds of troops surrounded the town�s main suburb to force the surrender of up to 50 Islamists. At least four men were killed and more than 30 injured in gunbattles that erupted when police stormed the town on Sunday. Officials said that 20 Jordanians and at least five others have been arrested on charges of arms and drugs-smuggling and instigating unrest. Fighting between Islamists and Jordanian security forces erupted again last night in Maan, with the militants firing on troops, who then blew up the alleged ringleaders� house. Maan has become a Muslim militant stronghold known for its defiance. Officials said that the crackdown was intended to get all potential �troublemakers� under control before the possible war on Iraq. The threat of an attack on Iraq has put King Abdullah in a precarious position. Regarded as one of America�s closest Arab allies, he has to balance this friendship against a population deeply opposed to US policies.
