-Caveat Lector- This has been a very interesting line. I recently wrote a term paper on the Hydrogen Economy. It's lengthy and I'm not about to post a long article. It's available to any that want it. My findings show though it's not going to be easy, a Hydrogen based economy beats another Dark Age.
I found that Iceland is moving to use their abundant geothermal and hydroelectric recourses to supply hydrogen to their fishing trawlers and buses in the capital. They see the handwriting on the wall. California is insisting on emission free vehicles. The automakers are trying to stop it, but I bet they don't. Harry Braun, author of "The Phoenix Project", is positive that wind power can supply the electricity needed to separate Hydrogen and Oxygen from water. Katharine Mieszkowski, a reporter for Salon Magazine in her article "Hydrotopia", GE and other companies are moving to hydrogen fuel cells for home use by next year. (2003) The energy industry is split. Dutch/Shell and BP are ahead of the game. They spent 10 years buying up every renewable technology and patenting it, and have huge hydrogen divisions. They're getting ready. BP's new slogan is "beyond oil." "Before the end of this year the first building works will be done for a state fuel cell research institute in the US state of Michigan. Doug Rothwell, head of a development society, said: "We want to make sure the transformation to hydrogen energy happens with us, not to us". The state has provided $50 Million for the center that will be called "NextEnergy" and will be located near Detroit. On 12.000 m2 there will be both research work and information for the public. Storage is an issue. Transporting compressed hydrogen on such a scale as we're talking about isn't practical. Transporting liquid hydrogen through existing pipelines isn't either. Chrysler is working on a method of storing the Hydrogen in a sodium borohydride. I'm not sure how that's working out. The point is that people are beginning to wake up to the facts. One thing is certain, either our children or grandchildren will inherit the Post Petroleum Economy. Invading Iraq and Saudi Arabia, drilling in the Alaskan Frontier and offshore, and squeezing it out of shale and poisoning groundwater with acid to crack it out of stubborn wells not withstanding.
