By a psychometric definition of intelligence, machines can already surpass
humans with respect to general intelligence, or "g", using a reasonably
weighted profile for comparison of homo sapiens vs. robo sapiens. See
<http://iio.ens.uabc.mx/~mbarbosa/atoma>.
The fact that a cyborg could replace me or my
children in the not to distant future does not sit well with me.
There are already scores of human body parts which are made of plastics,
metal etc. and are in daily use. Early trials of brain prosthetic devices,
like implanted electrodes in extreme cases of paralysis so that patients
can move cursors by using thought/will alone are well known. Professor
Warwick ("I, Cyborg" his latest book) is perhaps the most famous or
infamous of the Neurobots, the kind of cyborg of particular interest to us
here.

consequences of their actions?
Good question. If we are down to the last cubic mm of whatever blob of
cells makes us "really" who we are, what will it be? What part of the
brain? Or is there some kind of meta-physical entity which is the ultimate
control over the entire physical system?

and what restrictions we as a society want to put on the creation of A.I.
I don't think we as a society have any realistic power to place a
moratorium on genetic/nanotechnology/robotic technologies as Bill Joy
suggested. We, the common citizens of the world could make things worse
for ourselves by trying it, ie we could dumb ourselves down while the
500 or so billionaire families of the planet and the secret military
projects go on. There is no way we can control them. We can only try to
understand these sciences and technologies better for our own benefit.
> What kind of things don't we want cybenetic beings to be able to do?
Socially interacting robots are becoming more and more a fact of life, a
part of everyday society. This will become very dramatic when humanoids
are walking among us....soon. All kinds of laws will develop pertaining to
humanoid robots, trans-genic creatures and cyborgs. OUR laws.
> Who do we trust to program and maintain cyborgs?
We the citizens. Just as we have laws and rules and regulations re people,
we have to develop them re these new creations.
> How will cyborgs be accepted in a society that fears and hates the
unknown?
What do we know...knowledge...that's where we start.
> These are all very important questions we must ask ourselves.

capacity to feel.
There are only a half a dozen recognizable human facial emotional
expressions. How could we even tell if an elastomer-over-human-skeleton
robot face is experiencing REAL emotion or not?
> Then what makes a human being a human being and a robot a robot.
How will we be able to distinguish flesh and blood from robotics?
Eventually we won't.
> Will mean the end of our humanity?
It will mean a redfinition of humanity.
> What are your thoughts and ideas?
Don't worry. Be happy. And keep on thinking, thinking, thinking.
