RUSH: America's Truth Detector is not one to get excited about environmental
disasters,
real or imagined. When environmentalists predictably sounded dire warnings following
the
sinking 130 miles off the Spanish coast of a Bahamian-flagged oil tanker with most of
its
70,000 tons of fuel oil still on board, Rush had a profound, yet deceivingly simple
question
for these hand wringers.

"Listen to this, Im just reading this story here about this oil tanker thats
doomedsplit in
halfand sunk off the coast of Spain. Listenlisten to this: (reads from a news
account)
An environmentalist warned that the wreckage would be like a time bomb on the ocean
floor, some 11,800 feet down. See, some of the oil tanks in this tanker are intact,
not all of
the oil has spilled. But it might! Oh, it might! Were all going to die! Baah hah hah!
I mean,
this is what theyre trying to ferment on everybody. So, ok: what became of the oil in
the
Titanic? What became of thI mean, that was down 12,000 uh, 14,000 feet. Who died
from the oil in the Titanic? It wasnt in portI mean, theres still a lot of fuel oil
on board.
You know whawhaI would guarantee you that if those oil tanks leak open or whatever,
thethethe ocean 12,000 feet deeps gonna eat that oil so fast itll never reach the
surface, and if it does itll reach the surface in drops! Ahhh, it gets tiresome, you
know, II
know the nature of the program is cyclical, but this is how the liberals do itthey
just keep
pounding us, they just keep coming back with this stuff more and more and they wear
people out." [Listen to Rush / Documents / Nov 19 Titanic Oil Spill]

REALITY: Rush was absolutely correct when he said that no one died because oil leaked
from the Titanics fuel tanks. One possible explanation might be that the Titanic was
not
fueled by oil.

As anyone who saw the blockbuster movie will recall, dozens of stokers worked around
the
clock shoveling coal in the Titanics massive boiler room. For those who didnt see the
movie, a Canadian government (Nova Scotia) website provides a Fact Sheet on the
Titanics
specifications:

Engines: 2 reciproctating 4 cylinder, triple expansion, direct - acting, inverted
engines:
30,000hp 77 rpm. 1 low pressure Parsons turbine: 16,000hp 165rpm
Propellers: 3 ; Center turbine: 17 feet ; Left/Right wings: 23 feet 6 inches
Boilers: 29 (24 double ended boilers and 5 single ended boilers)
Furnaces: 159 providing a total heating surface of 144,142 sq. feet
Fuel requirement: 825 tons of coal per day

A British website dedicated to the history of the Titanic confirms that the ship was
coal
driven: But due to a disruptive coal strike that had spread throughout the United
Kingdom,
many ships were laid up due to the lack of fuel, and consequently, over 17,000 men were
left without work in Southampton alone. Even Titanic was indirectly affected by the
strike:
she had to top-up her own coal bunkers with coal acquired from other IMM vessels
laid-up
in Southampton. http://www.rmstitanic.co.uk/ titanic_titanic_-_southampton.shtml

RUSH: Rumors of a Bush Administration plan to out-source several hundred thousand
federal jobs to bid by private contractors reminded Rush of just how deceptive a
previous
administration had been when it claimed to have reduced the size of the government
payroll.

"Another way to look at this, ladies and gentlemen, just contrast this to Al Gores
Reinventing Government. You know, Al Gore has this big deal about reinventyou know
what they did to reinvent government under Clinton-Gore? They said they cut a bunch of
federal jobs(Rush does Clinton impersonation): You go backI tell you whatyou look
at
the federal employee rollpayrollthe number of people working for the federal
government now versus when there wasJohn F. Kennedywe got 200,000 federal fewer
(sic) workers now than when Kennedy was presidentI mean, we are making huge
strides (Rush ends impersonation) Yeah, they all were military jobs, folks. The
Clinton
Administration cut the military and they called it Reinventing Government. Thats in
essence what they did. They didnt reinvent anything, and they didnt downsize anything
except the Defense Department, pure and simple." [Listen to Rush / Documents / Nov 14
Federal Job Cuts]

REALITY: The United States Government Office of Personnel Management (OPM) reaches a
somewhat different conclusion. Of course, the OPM has the advantage of using actual
data
when it compared the size and shape of the federal workforce between the time the
Clinton
Administration came into office (January 1993) and the end of its two terms (December
2000). http:// www.opm.gov/feddata/html/dec00fac.asp

OPMs statistics refute Rushs claim that Clinton "didnt downsize anything except the
Defense Department." The OPM numbers show that from January 1993 through December
2000, downsized federal agencies lost a net total of 460,653 jobs. While the majority
of
those jobs were indeed defense jobsthe so-called "peace dividend" following the demise
of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold Warnon-defense employment was cut
significantly as well. More than twenty-five non-defense federal agencies were
downsized
during that period. They lost a net total of 168,179 jobsmore than a third of all
jobs lost.
During that period, cuts in defense jobs totaled 292,474. Therefore, non-defense
agencies
accounted for 36.5% (168,179) of the total downsizing, while defense job losses
accounted
for 63.5% (292,474).

RUSH: Upset that a Minnesota Supreme Court ruling preserved the right of voters who
cast
absentee ballots for the late Senator Paul Wellstone to cast new absentee ballots in
the
election, Rush saw a logistical nightmare.

"The Minnesota Supreme Court violated the law anywaythey shouldn't have counted at all
in the first place! This is a way to get them to count. And by the way, here's another
thing:
how do we know that the people who got absentee ballots the first time are getting them
again? How do we know they're not flooding the State with absentee ballots, that are
gonna
come in late, 'cause they can't be delivered in time? I mean, they print these things
last
Thursday, and mail 'em on Friday, Post Office doesn't deliver mail on Saturday or
Sunday.
They're not going to get their ballots till today! Then turn around and votecan't
FedEx
themyou've got to mail 'em back insome people might make the mistake of
FedExingyou don't have to do that, folks, up there in Minnesota. Send 'em regular
mailsend 'em in Fourth Classas long as they show up by December the Democrats will
find a way to count them!" [Listen to Rush / Documents / Nov 4 Saturday Mail]

REALITY: Whether or not it is proper or legal to disenfranchise Minnesota voters who
cast
absentee ballots for a candidate who died before the election does not alter the fact
that
Rush was incorrect in claiming that new absentee ballots could not be delivered by the
Post
Office on a Saturday. As most American adults know, the US Postal Service delivers
mail on
Saturdays. And when attempts are made to curtail Saturday delivery, they are invariably
rejected.

>From the Washington Post: Wednesday, July 11, 2001- The U.S. Postal Service announced
yesterday that it will not end Saturday mail delivery, quashing an idea that drew
swift and
bitter opposition from members of Congress, bulk mailers and the public.
