Meanwhile <http://lists.apple.com/archives/x11-users/2011/Feb/msg00013.html> (though half a decade old) does suggest some pretty similar possibilities to on *nix. OTOH, the stuff under "Want another X11.app server" at the bottom of <https://www.xquartz.org/FAQs.html> points up some xinitrc locations. quartz-wm (from a quick glance at the source) doesn't seem like it does enough EWMH stuff for --replace to work, so if it's running... > By the way, the first time I tried it, XQuartz miserably fails with > xeyes.
