I guess this specific line doesn't mean anything special... The ICCCM specifies (http://tronche.com/gui/x/icccm/sec-4.html) that the client should in addition to unmapping its window, send a synthetic UnmapNotify event to the root window to make sure the window manager really knows about this unmapping.
