The initial pull stored the server name and the branch pattern. You
can see what they are if you do this:
mtn list vars database
When you stand in the work directory, monotone will take the database
to use from _MTN/options (MT/options with pre-0.26 monotone) unless
you say explicitely what database to use with the --db option.
