Venerdì si parlava di Cisco IOU (IOS on Unix) che dovrebbe essere un simulatore utilizzato internamente (e segretamente) da Cisco per presentazioni e testing. Cisco solitamente nega o sorvola su questo argomento. Incuriosito ho cominciato a cercare e ho trovato alcune informazioni:

It’s been around for a long time, but was always limited for use in the Advanced Services as far as I heard. I worked with it during Cisco Networkers in Barcelone and it really is fast and efficient! To compare it to Dynamips, for 1 Dynamips emulated router, you run 5 to 10 IOU routers in terms of resources. Still it’s unnecessary to get your hands on it, because it will remain within Cisco. [...] Just like Dynamips, IOU does NOT support switches, so there will be no layer 2 troubleshooting!" Comunque sia è limitato ai soli router, un po' come GNS3 solo che dovrebbe essere in grado di eseguire istanze in numero dieci volte superiore rispetto a GNS3. Infine qui ne troviamo una traccia ufficiale Cisco che lo lega ad ambienti di test: http://www.ciscosystems.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_2sb/release/notes/122SB.pdf "This applies to IOU (simulator) images only." Sembra infatti che IOU venga utilizzato per un primo debug di IOS slegato dall'hardware. A chi invece era interessato a sistemi di web filtering, anni fa abbiamo provato Netasq (http://www.netasq.com/). Non ne siamo rimasti entusiasti, ma il nostro caso era un po' particolare.
