 The Kandy Whales

Kandy Whales are Philly's premiere hot core outfit, bringing a near-sickening euphoria to the pop/rock arena with a lyrical poison that intoxicates in the proper dose, being something like the party band at the wedding of glam-punk and witchcraft. The band is comprised of voters from Washington, Oregon, California and Nebraska. Described as a "demonic dancing cowboy preacher," Kandy Whales is led by singer and cartoon necromancer Clark Roth. Roth is backed by Paul Haidle (programming, bass, guitar), Aron Dunlap (violin, vocals, keyboards), and Joshua Delpech-Ramey (drums). The quartet originally met ten years ago at a religious theme-park in Seattle, where they fastened their lap belts and sped wide-mouthed into the honey mustard horror of Western vertigo. Civil war ensued. Entire egos rose and fell. And by the end of the summer of 2000, they were each delivered into the hands of the Philadelphians. It was then and there that Roth's solo effort PORN FORT and an overabundance of mutant side projects died together during the cold winter, and re-surfaced as a long, rock-hard submarine, and a truly Vaudevillian spectacle of 21st-century apocalyptic [get]-all. Evoking the pioneers of technological cross-contamination, yet somehow redolent of the modern tempers of Prick, The Pixies, The Faint and Peaches, Kandy Whales measures out just enough deep groove to keep the millenniumâs multi-genre love child entranced in front of a distinctly American hearth. But truly the 'Whales are an animal all their own,' who deliver a sinister, angelic, dance-your-ass-off good time. The band's 9-song debut record, Blow Up!, is due to appear in April of 2004, featuring the hit party singles, "Sex Box" and "Atlantic City". http://www.kandywhales.com

12-3pm: The 40th Street Summer Series Presents (outdoors on The Rotunda's front plaza (Walnut Street side))

A Cheap Art Bazaar from the Dead Artists Guild. The Cheap Art Bazaar is a way for artists to get their work directly into the hands of people who like art. By bypassing the gallery system, artists are able to sell their work cheaply (which is great for any art lovers) while still making money (which is great for the artists). The Bazaar is run by a grass roots organization known as the Dead Artists Guild, who have peddled lovely goods at Puppet Uprising performances, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and many other local spots. Handmade postcards, prints, paintings, drawings, and so much more will be on sale for incredibly affordable prices, keeping in line with the Dead Artists Guild's mission of bringing art to all people. Sales will occur on The Rotunda plaza. Additional sales will occur along 40th Street, between Walnut and Locust.
