I am glad to see real activity with cuneiform for Linux! Is there a more
recent Ubuntu package available? I have been writing a bash script which uses
zenity dialogs to further simplify OCR and scanning functions. It is part of
the Vinux distribution (vinux.org.uk), which is customized and provides a
stable environment for users of screen readers and magnifiers. Many serious
accessibility issues have been fixed and sent upstream to the main Ubuntu
distribution. Vinux 3.0, is vased on Ubuntu 10.0.4 Lucid. My script, called
'speedy-ocr' currently revolves around cuneiform 0.7.0 package in the Ubuntu
repository.
As you might guess, OCR is very important to this community! They are also
forced to pay over $1,000 US for a Windows solution or for most blind people
just manage without this Important capability!
I am very interested in the latest 1.0 release. Is the automatic image
conversion directly with ImageMagick++ new to version 1.0? Are there any other
significant additions? We had a user who unknowingly upgraded cuneiform to
version 0.9, which caused errors and basically breaks the script (his
assessment). Have there been changes to the command line syntax or the
processing that might impact a bash script written to cuneiform 0.7?
What is required to install ImageMagick++ for Ubuntu Lucid? If desirable,
Vinux might be interested in providing a cuneiform 1.0 package on the Vinux
LaunchPad until it is picked up by Ubuntu repositories.
What is the state of cuneiform in regards to Open Source? Vinux has a segment
who are purists. There is even a Libra edition. Personally, I load up as much
functionality as possible, including low cost solutions like IBM's Text to
Speech, Voxin.
