Are you saying that the thread libcurl is running in is somehow magically blocking another thread from executing?

My libcurl is not compiled with c-ares library can that cause DNS resolution to block the entire process.

I guess that depends on your system but it does sound like a weird thing to me. I figure you need to investigate your system's threading and name resolving abilities.
