Thanks for the tip, I've had a quick look at the changelogs before but only saw 
an oblique reference to a ssl bug. I'll have to check in to them further.

Unfortunately, changing to a newer version of libcurl is not so simple in my 
environment.

7.15.5 is also very old (more than 4 years!). Maybe that version
has problems with proxy. You should check the changelog, or
simply use a current version.
