To me, it's not really a technical matter of dealing with branches. git makes branches very easy as you point out.

I just like to keep track of what's going on so I prefer using just a single branch for development, plus I want us to focus on bug fixes this period so discouraging working on new features for a while is part of that.

The autobuilds also build from the master branch and it (the autobuild system) works better if it gets to deal with a limited number of new things at a time (rather than seeing 4 weeks of new features merged one day).

Of course, if we were more active people and wanted speedier development I figure use of more branches would be a natural choice.
