The DNS server remains on the same IP. (The DNS primary and secondary server IP addresses remain the same).

Right. Then it is up to getaddrinfo() to return the correct data, and if that fails I lean towards simply blaming that. It seems like a cached negative result for some reason.

I figure you should be able to strace the process to see that it gets called and returns something.
