We change internals all the time and sometimes that ends up with some unintended side-effects. Most often due to lack of good test cases and features that aren't used often enough for us to detect immediately when they break.
I hope it works fine for 7.40.0 or later.

It lacks a lot of checks and it uses a busy-loop so I wouldn't call it correct, but I believe it should work.
Set a few break-point and figure out what happens?

Skip libcurl and just connect a socket to the server? You're not using libcurl very much anyway...
