Maybe I wasn't clear, but that's also what I meant: The RFC does *not* mandate 
that expired cookies are stored. My understanding of the RFC was that it is up 
to the application to decide when to discard any expired (or even non-expired) 
cookies. Only, curl releases the application from this decision, which may be 
convenient for most but is unfortunate for this use case.

This requirement comes from ETSI 202 184 and I personally do not yet know the 
background of it. I have forwarded this question to the DTG who is in charge of 
it.
