It hasn't been released. It was just merged into master and is targeted for release in 7.55.0, which is due in August.
I also worry about the process failure whereby this was discussed on the list at least twice, many months apart, and we didn't come up with such an obvious option.
Yeah, that's unfortunate but not a lot we can do about it as I see it. At least we got the suggestion now and we have time to correct it!
