It is probably an interop problem with the server somehow. If this reproduces with a recent libssh2 and curl version, it could be interesting to dig deeper and get some SSH specific details to see what's going on. With this old setup of yours however, I don't think there's much hope.

That version is 60 releases (more than 8 years) old. Since then, we've fixed over 2800 bugs...!
