Not exactly what we're talking about, but I just felt that needed to mention that...

curl still builds fine on legacy unix systems from the *90s* if you just use the configure build option instead. The oldest Ubuntu installs you can find are also still able to build curl using that.

For legacy systems, the autotools build system might be the appropriate option.

For the lowest acceptable cmake version discussion, I leave it to those with the knowledge to speak.
