Is it time to start providing a .7z version of the releases?
Seems like an absolutely reasonable ask, the difference to .zip is pretty
substantial.
Someone on Mastodon informed me that 7zip on Windows can already handle tar.xz
files.
Someone else mentioned that Windows itself has recently added native support for
tar.xz.
I think this might suggest that we can just stick to what we have...
To be more precise 7z can handle a lot unpacking formats.
https://www.7-zip.org/
=> Unpacking only: APFS, AR, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, EXT, FAT, GPT,
HFS, IHEX, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, QCOW2, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF,
UEFI, VDI, VHD, VHDX, VMDK, XAR and Z.
and a `7z i` shows what Format and Codecs supports the installed version.
So I would vote for 7z format.
