You can put useful global options in ~/.cvsrc. I have:
cvs -z3 -q
update -d -P -I ! -I CVS -I .#*
checkout -P
diff -u -p
You definitely need the -P, a bit of compression seems to stop massive
amounts of data being sent to the cvs server.
