Our single-router installation was rock stable under netbsd-5, and when it showed the occasional hiccup under -7, there was a push towards redundancy. So I set up a pair of machines running as failover routers (carp, pf) with netbsd-7, then netbsd-8. The crash rate went from twice a day to twice an hour; PRs are 51729, 51877, 51930, 52263. In the end, I had to acknowledge I was clearly out of my depth, and looked elsewhere. When I learned that FreeBSD had mp-enabled pf, my choice was made. The installation is stable, and max. throughput over 10 GBE is +50% over NetBSD. I put pkgsrc on the machines, and I do miss NetBSD's clean simplicity - FreeBSD feels byzantine at times. But there is no arguing in the face of stability. Cheerio, -- Hauke Fath <ha...@espresso.rhein-neckar.de> Ernst-Ludwig-Straße 15 64625 Bensheim Germany
