As Alexey had asked[1] last month, I too would like to understand the
rationale behind using a preprocessor compiler option in CFLAGS (rather
than in CPPFLAGS, which is presumably more appropriate).

This is just out of my own curiosity, so please interpret it as nothing
more than a reminder to consider the question. :)
