I think it's time for you to write a paragraph
about the magic in bsd.sites.mk.

The paragraph is in ports/CHANGES. I'll add one to
the porter's handbook, but first I want to support
patch_sites, too, which is not a trivial task,
requiring like 48 hours of hands-on grepping and
testing. I intend to do that soon.
