My perspective on this is that the BIND in the base should have a solid default configuration that fits the needs of the majority of our users, and anything else can be done with the port which has knobs for things like threads/no threads and replacing the base install.

Going with a port for this means supporting the ports infrastructure respectively an extra installation procedure. Nothing that can't be done just extra pain;-)

What I did when I was at Yahoo! was to create a package on a master server and then install the package on all my clients. In fact, that's why I developed the "replace base" code in the first place.
