It turned out that trying 'push' again a few times eventually worked, like Manuel said. That doesn't make it a good thing... is it a darcs bug or similar?

Again?

With darcs-1.0.9 earlier today in a local ghc repo,

]./push-all [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/darcs --ssh-cm
== running darcs push --no-set-default [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/darcs/ghc --ssh-cm
Enter passphrase for key '/Users/me/HOME/.ssh/id_rsa':

It's still sitting there, stuck, after I entered my passphrase... no, it just said
Read from remote host darcs.haskell.org: Connection timed out
Enter passphrase for key '/Users/me/HOME/.ssh/id_rsa': [[I entered my passphrase again]]
Invalid repository:  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/darcs/ghc

darcs failed: (scp) failed to fetch: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/darcs/ghc/_darcs/inventory
darcs failed: 512 at ./push-all line 29.
]

And I can repeat the getting-stuck. Am I doing something wrong, or am I just unlucky??(==> then what?)

FWIW I have had this behaviour many times myself. Sometimes you need to try pushing many times before it works. For me, it seems to happen only with darcs.haskell.org repositories and mostly with ghc's. (Repos on our local servers are fine.) So, *maybe* network delay and size of the repository are a factor.
