Snapshot of codegen refactoring to share with simonpj
I really should have amended this patch with a more informative commit
message before pushing. Oops.
Anyway, this patch series is a refactoring of the code generator that
Simon and I have been working on over the last few days. There are no
functional changes. We did fix one large performance bug in the new
code generator (it's still much too slow, though).
