* Poly.Lazy needs to override some Poly.Base defns.
Otherwise it isn't sufficiently lazy. In particular, we need to
override the `apply` combinator, and then to re-code many of the other
quite general combinators in terms of `apply`, to ensure that they can
succeed early.
