EARTH ACTION: Unless Additional Funds Raised, Ecological Internet Closes at End
of Summer

June 1, 2010

Dear Earth loving colleagues,

It has been a tremendous pleasure to work with you all online – some as long as
20 years – to protect rainforests, climate and promote ecological
sustainability. No one has diagnosed the severity of ecological crises, and
together done more to promote implementation of policy adequate to achieve
global ecological sustainability, than Ecological Internet’s massive global
network spanning virtually every country. Sadly, after being user funded for 12
years, and having faced some one off expenditures this past year, our cash flow
is very bad. We are falling so far short of our $50,000 fund-raising goal, that
if no more is raised, Ecological Internet will be closing its doors at the end
of the northern hemisphere’s summer (3 months – end of August).

Our current “Earth's Ecology & Ecological Internet Need You Now More Than Ever”
fund-drive requires your support immediately if we are to continue achieving
massive people power conservation victories. You are urged to make a
tax-deductible donation at: http://www.ecoearth.info/shared/donate/ . There is
information on doing so by check, credit card and on facebook causes. We urge
all network members to donate what they can afford, make a further contribution
if possible; or during this unprecedented, particularly lean period, to
increase your pledges of support.

Ecological Internet has pioneered a new type of grassroots global Earth
advocacy. Not only did we invent blogging (1993), but more importantly, we
established political blogging and the precedent of individuals and small
groups taking political ecological action for Earth using the the same tools as
the big guys in government, industry, business and media. These and other
online social entrepreneurship firsts established a more equal playing field
and made possible the hundreds of subsequent efforts going on around the world
to use the Internet to protect Earth. And it all started here.

What an amazing ride we have had to this point! For the past 20 years I have
scrimped and sacrificed, earning a PhD while constructing (and self-financing)
the world’s first environmental portals. For most of this time I worked 100
hour weeks, though as I have gotten a bit older has gone down to 80 hours! I
have been open with the emotional burden of bearing witness to Earth’s demise
24/7/365, including a broken marriage. Yet I have worked through all of this,
remarried my ex-wife, gotten mentally and physically healthy, and desire
tremendously to continue with this work.

The money we raise every six months goes for very modest expenditures. Our
Internet broad-band and hosting expenses run some $1,000/month, our office and
expenses another $1,000/month, and replacing server hardware and software on
average another $1,000. When possible I have taken a $3,000/month salary plus
health insurance for my family (still deeply in debt from University), and we
currently have three part-time staff persons other than myself running another
$500/month. We recently opened an office and living compound in Papua New
Guinea which was running $4000/month, but is now down to $1,500/month as we are
taking in boarders and setting up an eco-tourism facility.

So Ecological Internet’s total expenses to run the largest and most effective
entirely online global network committed to achieving global ecological
sustainability is $8,000/month – or approximately $50,000 every six months (our
current goal). We frequently have once off expenditures for travel, computer
programming contracts and new hardware/software which are met outside of this
budget during out larger end of year fund-raiser. Hence our yearly budget the
past three years has been some $125,000. Can you believe it? The world’s
largest and most effective online portals, search engines, news tracking and
global Earth action network for ecological sustainability for the cost of one
big NGO’s staff person? But this is all at risk of being lost. And sadly, we
mean it this time more than ever.

I implore you to donate – not waiting for others to do so – but you yourself
helping to keep this people power Earth advocacy network – free of corporate,
government, foundation and celebrity control – running for another six months.
We are providing the independent, deep ecology based foundation upon which
humanity’s last best chances of achieving global ecological sustainability are
being built. Our influence and reach is subtle but massive, as millions in
government, academia, communities and NGOs depend upon us for biocentric
information and action opportunities.

We expect to make the goal, but given the escalating ecosystem collapse, we
took some risks this past year necessary to continue, expand and make our
efforts more effective. More than ever we need your help to bridge our
short-term cash flow problems and projected running out of funds at the end of
the summer. Please donate what you can as soon as possible, and get those
pledges in soon. And let us know of opportunities for collaboration,
consulting, grant and other in-kind donation opportunities such as web
co-location for our servers. Together and in concert with the broader movement,
we are Earth and humanity’s best hope. Donate now please!
