+
Integration with and adoption of Web 2.0 concepts has been an
important development strategy for OOo, and this is a strong adaptation of wiki
concepts into the familiar word processor paradigm. Its growth should be
interesting to observe and groundbreaking in many ways.

+

It was a great pleasure to meet
RedFlag 2000's Calc developers at OOoCon in Beijing. Of course the successful
collaboration continues, resulting in some cool new features:

+

+
When typing a formula, a little tip help window now shows the
syntax for the function that is edited.

+
In addition to the same zoom slider in the status bar that
Writer has had since 3.0, in the page preview, we have a similar slider in the
toolbar to quickly modify the print scale.

+
Sorting now preserves the original order of entries with equal
sort keys, and it defaults to sorting by the cursor position's column, making
the toolbar sort buttons much more useful.

+
There are some improvements to formula calculation, for INDIRECT
and array formulas.

+
The formula features are in CWS "odff05",
the other features in CWS "calc47",
both scheduled to go into 3.1.
investigate the reasons influencing the adoption of open source desktop
software such as Linux and OpenOffice.org. However, few studies have been
devoted to determine the reasons for not adopting open source desktop software.
In order to address this issue, we present a case study on the Belgian Federal
Public Service (FPS) Economy which considered the use of OpenOffice.org, but
eventually decided not to adopt OpenOffice.org as their primary office suite.
This decision was to a large degree influenced by the fact that a large number
of users within the FPS Economy perform data–intensive tasks such as
statistical data analysis and reporting on a daily basis. Notwithstanding the
fact that several reasons were actually in favor of the migration, we have
identified several barriers that may discourage the use of OpenOffice.org in
similar environments.”

[EMAIL PROTECTED] Wiki Becomes an Official Incubator Project

+

+
[EMAIL PROTECTED], Kay Ramme’s wiki project built on OpenOffice and
ODF, has been accepted as an official incubator project, <a
href="http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/odf_www_ooo_conf_2008";>Ramme
announces.

+
He presented it at the recently-concluded OpenOffice.org Conference in
Beijing and writes, “Since last week [EMAIL PROTECTED] is an Official
Incubator Project <img
src="http://www.solidoffice.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif";
alt=":-)" class="wp-smiley" /> You find it’s home page at <a
href="http://odf-at-www.openoffice.org";>http://odf-at-www.openoffice.org.”

+
Integration with and adoption of Web 2.0 concepts has been an important
development strategy for OOo, and this is a strong adaptation of wiki concepts
into the familiar word processor paradigm. Its growth should be interesting to
observe and groundbreaking in many ways.

+Some Calc features for 3.1 from RedFlag 2000
+

+

+
It was a great pleasure to meet RedFlag 2000's Calc developers at OOoCon in
Beijing. Of course the successful collaboration continues, resulting in some
cool new features:

+

+
When typing a formula, a little tip help window now shows the syntax
for the function that is edited.

<img alt="Syntax highlighting"
src="http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/resource/calc/calc31_syntax.png"; />

+
In addition to the same zoom slider in the status bar that Writer has
had since 3.0, in the page preview, we have a similar slider in the toolbar to
quickly modify the print scale.

<img alt="Page preview"
src="http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/resource/calc/calc31_preview.png"; />

+
Sorting now preserves the original order of entries with equal sort
keys, and it defaults to sorting by the cursor position's column, making the
toolbar sort buttons much more useful.

+
There are some improvements to formula calculation, for INDIRECT and
array formulas.

<img alt="Array formula"
src="http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/resource/calc/calc31_array.png"; />

+
The formula features are in CWS "<a
href="http://eis.services.openoffice.org/EIS2/cws.ShowCWS?Path=DEV300%2Fodff05";>odff05",
the other features in CWS "<a
href="http://eis.services.openoffice.org/EIS2/cws.ShowCWS?Path=DEV300%2Fcalc47";>calc47",
both scheduled to go into 3.1.

-
Benjamin Horst: Case Study on Non-Adoption of Open Source

-

-

The following study has been making the
rounds lately, but it’s also worth keeping track of here, for future
reference.

-
Living in a world where most companies and small businesses I know
are comfortable with open source and most already use it to a greater or lesser
extent, it’s even more important to understand those who
don’t use it and the smaller set of those who deliberately decide not
to adopt open source yet. This knowledge will hone our development and
promotion efforts to address those users’ needs in future
revisions.

-
An academic paper written by Huysmans, Ven, and Verelst entitled
Reasons
for the Non-Adoption of OpenOffice.org in a Data-Intensive Public
Administration is an informative resource for this
purpose.

-
The paper’s abstract reads:

-
“Several academic studies have already been conducted to
investigate the reasons influencing the adoption of open source desktop
software such as Linux and OpenOffice.org.

-
The entire paper is available online at the link above for a detailed
reading.

The groundwork of the past few years is beginning to pay off for a
large number of first-movers around the world. I expect the migration trend
will continue to accelerate as more and more case studies help to sway the
slower adopters.

-
Benjamin Horst: Case Study on Non-Adoption of Open Source

-

-

-

The following study has been making the rounds
lately, but it’s also worth keeping track of here, for future
reference.

-
Living in a world where most companies and small businesses I know
are comfortable with open source and most already use it to a greater or lesser
extent, it’s even more important to understand those who
don’t use it and the smaller set of those who deliberately decide not
to adopt open source yet.

-
The entire paper is available online at the link above for a detailed
reading.
