+

From a developer's perspective,
OpenOffice.org
+3.1 is done – code freeze, the last chance for regular bug
+fixes, already passed, with only the usual „fix the show stoppers“
+phase left.

+
So, what's up next? Especially, what's up next in OpenOffice.org
+Base?

+
Sure, there's always some bugs to fix. More
+bugs than we'll ever be able to fix, probably.
But while
+fixing bugs is certainly rewarding (Supposedly, not all of my peers
+would agree to that :), and to a certain degree a mere necessity, our
+users (and we ourselves) rightfully expect more than this – new
+features, improved usability, better performance, you name it.

+
Improved performance is a major goal of OpenOffice.org for
+post-3.1 versions, with quite a few developers from Sun's core
+OpenOffice.org teams being scheduled to this
+project. Certainly, the Base team will join in here. We already
+identified some weak spots, and we'll probably continue to find, and
+hopefully fix, some.

+
However, this article is about features. Which
of all the
+possible features you can imagine should be done next? Which are
+severely needed, which are nice to have, and which would be a
+complete waste to start with? (Of course we and you want to have
all
+the features … but last time I asked my manager for 20 or so more
+people in the Base team, he stared so … oddly at me. Not sure what
+he meant with this, but we didn't get the people 'till now.)

+
So, we set down in the Base team, and did some brain storming. We
+published the result in our mailing list, and asked for feedback and
+additions. (Just in case that next time, you want to participate, too
+– find out more about the list here.)

+
The result of all of this can be found in the OpenOffice.org Wiki:

+
When reading through the “feature pool”, you'll notice it's a
+wild collection of ideas – minor ones which can be done in less
+than a day, and really big ones which probably won't be done during
+the next 3 or 5 or 10 years … But hey, that's what “brain
+storming” is about :)

+

+
And now that you were brave enough to read that far: If you had 10
+points to spend on an arbitrary combination of the items from the
+list – which ones would you pick?

+
We'd be interested in your feedback on this. If you want to
+participate, browse to the feature
+pool, and distribute 10 points to any items you think would be
+most beneficial to Base. This could be all 10 points on 1 item, or 1
+point on 10 items, each. Or anything in between – the more points,
+the more important you consider the respective feature. Just do the
+math, and do not use up more than 10 points :). Then, start up your
+favorite mail client, and write down the items you chose, preceded by
+the points you gave them. Finally, send the mail to
+[email protected].
+(Note that this is a mailing list, and every member of the DBA
+project has access to its
+archive.)

+
The poll starts immediately, and ends 15th
February
+(which is next Sunday). The week after, we'll publish the results,
+here in GullFOSS as well as in our mailing list. (I'll probably set
+up a small database holding the results, plus use Sun
+Report Builder's cool charting feature to display them.)

+
We'll use the results as one measure for
deciding 'bout the
+next steps in Base. Of course, there are other measures as well, for
+instance available resources. So please don't be too disappointed if
+a certain feature wins in the poll, but will not immediately be
+implemented. This doesn't mean your feedback is useless – it
+definitely isn't! – it just means there always are some more side
+constraints to care for.

+
So, hurry on, that's your chance to make a difference to the next
+version of OpenOffice.org Base!

href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-10147920-16.html">CNet
reports Obama is asking industry experts for more information on the benefits
of open source:

-

Sun Chairman Scott McNealy… has been
asked by President Obama to author a white paper on the benefits the U.S.
government can derive from open source.

-
McNealy is quoted in the BBC’s recent article, Calls for
Open Source Government:

-

The secret to a more secure and cost effective
government is through open source technologies and products.

-
The claim comes from one of Silicon Valley’s most respected
business leaders Scott McNealy, a co-founder of Sun
Microsystems.

-
Particularly memorable is the BBC article’s discussion of
open source as an improved form of government behavior, pioneered during
Obama’s campaign:

-

Errol Louis of the New York Daily News seemed to
agree.

-
He described Mr Obama as “our first open source President,
a leader willing to let anybody and everybody figure out how, when and where
they want to get involved.”

-
He noted that the strategy popularised by computer software companies
in giving away software to get others to improve on it has now been applied to
politics.

-
Indeed the new Change.gov website is said to be a portal for
“interactive government” and “open source
democracy.”

+users (and we ourselves) rightfully expect more than this – new
+features, improved usability, better performance, you name it.

+
Improved performance is a major goal of OpenOffice.org for
+post-3.1 versions, with quite a few developers from Sun's core
+OpenOffice.org teams being scheduled to <a
href="http://performance.openoffice.org/";>this
+project. Certainly, the Base team will join in here. We already
+identified some weak spots, and we'll probably continue to find, and
+hopefully fix, some.

+
However, this article is about features. Which of all the

+up a small database holding the results, plus use <a

+
We'll use the results as one measure for deciding 'bout the

-
Now <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-10147920-16.html";>CNet
reports Obama is asking industry experts for more information on the benefits
of open source:

-

Sun Chairman Scott McNealy… has been asked by President
Obama to author a white paper on the benefits the U.S. government can derive
from open source.

-
McNealy is quoted in the BBC’s recent article, <a

through open source technologies and products.

-
The claim comes from one of Silicon Valley’s most respected business
leaders Scott McNealy, a co-founder of Sun Microsystems.

-
Particularly memorable is the BBC article’s discussion of open source
as an improved form of government behavior, pioneered during Obama’s
campaign:

-

Errol Louis of the New York Daily News seemed to agree.

-
He described Mr Obama as “our first open source President, a leader

-
He noted that the strategy popularised by computer software companies in
giving away software to get others to improve on it has now been applied to
politics.

-
Indeed the new Change.gov website is said to be a portal for

+
GullFOSS: If You had 3 Wishes for Base - What would You
pick?

+

+

+

From a developer's perspective, OpenOffice.org

-
Benjamin Horst: Obama Investigates Open Source and Open
Standards

-

-

-

Twice before, I’ve noted instances
where Barack Obama has mentioned the importance of open standards and open
source for a transparent and democratic government.

-
(See Obama on
ODF? and OpenOffice.org
for the US Federal Government? — I used
question marks in each post title since it was not clear to me how far these
exercises might be carried.)

-
Now CNet
reports Obama is asking industry experts for more information on the benefits
of open source:

-
He noted that the strategy popularised by computer software companies
in giving away software to get others to improve on it has now been applied to
politics.

-
Indeed the new Change.gov website is said to be a portal for
“interactive government” and “open source
democracy.”
