+

It’s always instructive
to see what other open source fans consider their most useful FOSS
applications. Generally, this tracks well with their occupation, where
developers will choose text editors and Linux distros, designers will choose
graphics applications and page design programs, while others will choose
communication and media distribution programs.

+
I came across a blog post by SnowWrite titled, “In
Open Source I Trust: Top 5 Projects for
Daily Use.”

+
As a web designer and developer, she chooses the following:

+

+
VirtualBox

+
Plone

+
Firefox
(and the Web Developer Toolbar and Firebug Extension)

+
TweetDeck

+
Ubuntu

+

+
I agree that each one of these is a great and essential program
(except TweetDeck, which I have not used myself and cannot comment
on).

+
Her runners-up are GIMP, Amarok, and OpenOffice.

+
My own top five list would look pretty similar and include the
following (but not in a particular order, and I listed seven or eight,
depending on how you count):

+
OpenOffice (Useful
every day, and important strategically as an introduction to FOSS for many
users, as well as significant cost savings for students and small business
owners.)

+
Firefox (The guardian
of open web standards, and flat-out great as a browser.)

+
Miro (A
vanguard in open media access and standards. If I had time to watch videos,
I’d love it.)

+
Eclipse
and Aptana (Text editors
useful or optimized for website development.)

+
Drupal (My
equivalent to SnowWrite’s choice of Plone. Both good CMSs, but I
found installing Drupal on web hosts much easier to get me started.)

+
GIMP (Unique
user interface, but very useful for lots of image editing tasks, and it can
read Photoshop PSD files.)

+
Adium
(Cross-network IM client.)

+
What are your top five open source apps for your personal
use?

The OpenOffice.org Conference (OOoCon) is
the annual meeting of the international OpenOffice.org Community. It is the
premier event for anyone interested in or working with OpenOffice.org. OOoCon
is where representatives of all the community projects meet to celebrate and
learn from the achievements of the past twelve months, and discuss how to meet
the challenges of the next twelve.

We are now starting a
Community consultation to help us decide where to hold OOoCon 2009 and OOoCon
2010. If you were a registered member of the OpenOffice.org community on
January 1st 2009 and would like to attend OOoCon, please let us know your

Project received six
proposals for hosting the OpenOffice.org Annual
International Conference (OOoCon), and we eventually awarded OOoCon
2008 to Beijing, China. This year’s Call
for Location opened on December 29th last year, and closed at
midnight UTC last night.

-
I never know quite what to expect when I look in the Inbox, but this
year we have received seven proposals, from all round the world. These
proposals will be posted in full on the OOoCon 2009 website in due course, but
to whet your appetite, here’s a sneak preview of the
proposals:

-

-
Alexandria, Egypt: June 2009

-
Budapest, Hungary: early September, 2009

-
Guwahati, India: November 10-12, 2009

-
Orvieto, Italy: November 3-5, 2009

-
Quezon City, Philippines: November 2009

-
Reykjavik, Iceland: September 16-18, 2009

-
Riga, Latvia: November 12-13, 2009

-

-
We have had some brilliant conferences over the years, but it is hard
work indeed for a team to start from scratch, and run an event the size of
OOoCon after as little as four months’ preparation.

-
This year, we would like to try a change in the way we award OOoCon.
We would like to award not just OOoCon 2009, but also OOoCon 2010. The team
selected for OOoCon 2010 would be expected to work alongside the OOoCon 2009
team, to help them with OOoCon 2009, and also learn how to make OOoCon 2010
even better. Then next year we would award OOoCon 2011, etc.

-
This means that teams would have an extra year to prepare for OOoCon,
and would also be able to help with, and learn from, the team from the year
before.

-
So this may lead to some changes in the way we decide how OOoCon is
awarded, but we will still be looking for community members to have a major
influence in the decision. So if you’re planning to attend, please
read the proposals carefully as soon as they’re
posted!

+SnowWrite’s Top Five FOSS Projects
+

+

+
It’s always instructive to see what other open source fans consider
their most useful FOSS applications. Generally, this tracks well with their
occupation, where developers will choose text editors and Linux distros,
designers will choose graphics applications and page design programs, while
others will choose communication and media distribution programs.

+
I came across a blog post by SnowWrite titled, “<a
href="http://snowwrites.com/2009/02/04/in-open-source-i-trust-top-5-projects-for-daily-use/";>In
Open Source I Trust: Top 5 Projects for Daily Use.”

+
As a web designer and developer, she chooses the following:

+

+
<a href="http://www.virtualbox.org/";>VirtualBox

+
<a href="http://www.plone.org/";>Plone

+
<a
href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/?from=getfirefox";>Firefox (and
the Web Developer Toolbar and Firebug Extension)

+
<a href="http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta/";>TweetDeck

+
<a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/";>Ubuntu

+

+
I agree that each one of these is a great and essential program (except
TweetDeck, which I have not used myself and cannot comment on).

+
Her runners-up are GIMP, Amarok, and OpenOffice.

+
My own top five list would look pretty similar and include the following
(but not in a particular order, and I listed seven or eight, depending on how
you count):

+
<a href="http://www.openoffice.org/";>OpenOffice (Useful every day, and
important strategically as an introduction to FOSS for many users, as well as
significant cost savings for students and small business owners.)

+
<a href="http://www.getfirefox.com/";>Firefox (The guardian of open web
standards, and flat-out great as a browser.)

+
<a href="http://www.getmiro.com/";>Miro (A vanguard in open media access
and standards. If I had time to watch videos, I’d love it.)

+
<a href="http://www.eclipse.org/";>Eclipse and <a
href="http://aptana.com/";>Aptana (Text editors useful or optimized for
website development.)

+
<a href="http://www.drupal.org/";>Drupal (My equivalent to
SnowWrite’s choice of Plone. Both good CMSs, but I found installing
Drupal on web hosts much easier to get me started.)

+
<a href="http://www.gimp.org/";>GIMP (Unique user interface, but very
useful for lots of image editing tasks, and it can read Photoshop PSD
files.)

+
<a href="http://adiumx.com/";>Adium (Cross-network IM client.)

+
What are your top five open source apps for your personal use?

-
Alexandria, Egypt: June 2009

-
Budapest, Hungary: early September, 2009

-
Guwahati, India: November 10-12, 2009

-
Orvieto, Italy: November 3-5, 2009

-
Quezon City, Philippines: November 2009

-
Reykjavik, Iceland: September 16-18, 2009

-
Riga, Latvia: November 12-13, 2009

-

-
We have had some brilliant conferences over the years, but it is hard work
indeed for a team to start from scratch, and run an event the size of OOoCon
after as little as four months’ preparation.

-
This year, we would like to try a change in the way we award OOoCon. We
would like to award not just OOoCon 2009, but also OOoCon 2010. The team
selected for OOoCon 2010 would be expected to work alongside the OOoCon 2009
team, to help them with OOoCon 2009, and also learn how to make OOoCon 2010
even better. Then next year we would award OOoCon 2011, etc.

-
This means that teams would have an extra year to prepare for OOoCon, and
would also be able to help with, and learn from, the team from the year
before.

-
So this may lead to some changes in the way we decide how OOoCon is
awarded, but we will still be looking for community members to have a major
influence in the decision. So if you’re planning to attend, please read
the proposals carefully as soon as they’re posted!

for people without broadband, who may prefer to get OpenOffice.org on a CD.

-
We have an active network of <a

who bulk print each new edition onto CDs and make them available at low cost.
We also use a ‘print on demand’ service at <a

+
Benjamin Horst: SnowWrite’s Top Five FOSS Projects

+

+

It’s always instructive to see what
other open source fans consider their most useful FOSS applications. Generally,
this tracks well with their occupation, where developers will choose text
editors and Linux distros, designers will choose graphics applications and page
design programs, while others will choose communication and media distribution
programs.

+
Adium
(Cross-network IM client.)

use?

meeting of the international OpenOffice.org Community. It is the premier event
for anyone interested in or working with OpenOffice.org. OOoCon is where
representatives of all the community projects meet to celebrate and learn from
the achievements of the past twelve months, and discuss how to meet the
challenges of the next twelve.

We are now starting a
Community consultation to help us decide where to hold OOoCon 2009 and OOoCon

-

Last year, the <a

Project received <a

proposals for hosting the OpenOffice.org Annual
International Conference (OOoCon), and we eventually awarded <a

for Location opened on December 29th last year, and closed at
midnight UTC last night.

-
I never know quite what to expect when I look in the Inbox, but this
year we have received seven proposals, from all round the world. These
proposals will be posted in full on the OOoCon 2009 website in due course, but
to whet your appetite, here’s a sneak preview of the
proposals:

-

-
Alexandria, Egypt: June 2009

-
Riga, Latvia: November 12-13, 2009

-

-
We have had some brilliant conferences over the years, but it is hard
work indeed for a team to start from scratch, and run an event the size of
OOoCon after as little as four months’ preparation.

We would like to award not just OOoCon 2009, but also OOoCon 2010. The team

-
So this may lead to some changes in the way we decide how OOoCon is
awarded, but we will still be looking for community members to have a major
influence in the decision. So if you’re planning to attend, please

+

It’s always instructive to see what
other open source fans consider their most useful FOSS applications. Generally,
this tracks well with their occupation, where developers will choose text
editors and Linux distros, designers will choose graphics applications and page
design programs, while others will choose communication and media distribution
programs.

+
What are your top five open source apps for your personal
use?

OOo Marketeers: Where should we hold OOoCon?

The OpenOffice.org Conference (OOoCon) is the annual
meeting of the international OpenOffice.org Community.

2010. If you were a registered member of the OpenOffice.org community on
January 1st 2009 and would like to attend OOoCon, please let us know your
preferred location.

The Consultation closes at midnight
UTC on February 27th.

For full details, please
visit:
<a

-
John McCreesh: This year it’s seven

-

-

-

Last year, the OpenOffice.org Marketing

So if you’re planning to attend, please
read the proposals carefully as soon as they’re
posted!

-
John McCreesh: Not everybody has broadband…

-

-

-

We
released OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 last week. For people with broadband,
this means going to download.openoffice.org
and downloading from the nearest mirror site. However, it’s a large
download for people without broadband, who may prefer to get OpenOffice.org on
a CD.

-
We have an active network of community
distributors, who bulk print each new edition onto CDs and make them
available at low cost. We also use a ‘print on demand’
service at Lulu.com, who can
generate any number of CDs (from one upwards) and despatch around the world.
They’ve now got the latest 3.0.1 EN-US release.

-
So there’s no excuse for not having OpenOffice.org on your
computer!
