I was able to resolve the problem by using the strategy suggested by
Tony Hoyle in the thread "I thought I had it figured out":
I know use as CVSROOT:
:pserver:pcmaier26\\ritter@pcmaier26:/d//cvsroot
^^^^^^^^^^^
substitutes local computer for domain.
from the unix client. Works like a charm.
