When I had a similar problem with Win2003 server the default config for
'forwarders' was 'on' but none were entered. When requested the
installer should have selected none but instead left it enabled but
added no IP addresses to the forwarders list. This caused us many
problems which only became obvious when CVSNT 2.5.04.3236 was installed.

DNS was reconfigured with forwarders disabled and not only do the DNS
failures return immediately CVSNT has no delays and Linux clients on the
network do not now take 20..30 seconds before they show the contents of
a network folders.

Are you positive the forwarders are not enabled on your DNS server? Our
forward and reverse lookups also worked it was the time taken to return
a failure to unknown addresses causing the problem. As you are not on
the internet that should be just about any you can think of. e.g.
www.cvsnt.com :)
