I believe I have got my problems solved finally!  Some cable people came
out this morning to check everything.  It turns out the line going into
our house is bad.  They now have a line going across our backyard over
to the cable box thing behind our property.  In a couple of weeks they
will send someone over the bury the line. They also changed the
three-way splitter we had with one they said was newer, better.

So basically, I had a few problems.  One was the initial set up because
every time I'd call them they would just say they don't support linux. 
Since I couldn't use their set up disk they had to activate my account
from there.  Then nothing still worked because of the problem with the
line, which took a while to figure out.  I still had a problem with the
router set up this morning though too and had to call netgear.  It
needed to be reset - which I had done, but they had me hold the reset
button down for 15 seconds then unpower and repower the router, then
everything was ok!!

This has been going on since Tuesday, and I'm exhausted from having to
deal with it all.  I think I'm really going to like faster internet
service though!

Thanks for all your help and advice!  I really appreciate it that there
are people like linux users or whoever on the internet that will help
out others when they need it.  I hope I can also help out someone too
someday.
