I was beinning to suspect that too. Having the kernel+initrd images on the HD aren't going to work out of the box. Suspect I'd need to modify the rest of the files in the initrd to know that the remainder of the system was on the USB drive.

I was trying to do this for a stage 1 Gentoo install for the AdvLUG. Guess I'll go another way or look into syslinux.

I was just chatting with someone on IRC about booting floppy + USB. He suggested that grub won't work but that syslinux might. Just thought I'd pass it along.
