Note, we've discussed this before a few times.
Essentially, Lightning is a combo of ThunderBird (email) and Sunbird (calendering). But there are enough problems with the two separate products at present, it might be sometime before Outlook's perch is threatened.
To be really effective, it is the duo of Outlook+Exchange that need to be addressed with FLOSS. Posters on /. wanted:
Outlook + FLOSS Exchange killer Lightning + Exchange Lightning + FLOSS Exchange killer
For different scenarios, e.g Outlook bests Lightning currently, Exchange would be hard to migrate off of and the combined feature set of a groupware client with a solid server(s). The utility of Outlook and Exchange is must have for many users.
Since no good combination exists, many ent. will stick with Outlook+Exchange. :<
Note: I forgo the advanced features and run Thnderbird with Exchange on my laptop (linux.) Exchange is a full IMAP server. Some notes on connecting it to Horde
