I am very new to Linux and I just installed Libranet 2.8.1 about 5 times. I had been running into the problem of when selecting "games" during install, I would never be asked for CD2 and openoffice appeared not to be installed but I could install firefox and thunderbird over the internet with no problems. I didn't see openoffice as being installed so I tried to install it over the internet and everything looked as though it went well however, my whole "K" menu above bookmarks was gone.

When I didn't select "games" but had selected the Wine emulator as I am dual booting because of some DVD authoring software for windows, I was asked for CD2 but then ran into a bunch of problems with dependencies and the system wanting to install newer versions of files than I needed to install aplications that worked previously.

I've finally got Ooo, both Mozilla Ff and Tbird working and apache running. At the moment Quanta Plus comes up with the splash screen and that's it. I would like to get it working but I don't want to wipe out other stuff.

Is this behavior of installing a package while destroying another a common problem or a fluke?
Is there a way to back up the system?
Do the names of downloadable applications show up anywhere after apt-get update?

Bob
