Has anyone heard of a Web Archive file or a Single File Web Page?

A friend recently e-mailed me as an attachment a .mht file, the beginning of which looks like this:

<quote>
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: multipart/related; boundary="----=_NextPart_01C52AE5.FC82B8F0"

This document is a Single File Web Page, also known as a Web Archive file. If you are seeing this message, your browser or editor doesn't support Web Archive files. Please download a browser that supports Web Archive, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer.

</quote>

Is this an MS-only format, or do other browsers support this? A google for "firefox + Single File Web Page" showed a few hits, but nothing really informative. What can I do with .mht that I cannot do some other way?
