gave me a copy of Liberanet and I was not too impressed with it.

What version? 2.7 sucks since it's like 4 or 5 yrs old; 2.8.1, the so-called "current" version is at least 2 yrs old, but with judicious use of APT you can be up to modern software in, oh, about 3 or 4 hrs of downloading & installing. I'm using KDE 3.4, GNOME 2.10, OOo 1.4, GIMP 2.2, etc on my Libranet 2.8.1 box, for instance. So's Robin, since she's (accidentally) running Debian unstable on her Libranet machine! ;)

I
guess I should have kept an open mind
about it. It wasn't like Suse 9.0

RPM-based distro. Completely different. Apples & oranges.

or Mepis,

Debian-compatible (NOT Debian-based), but vastly more simplified. A bit different in aims.

or Fedora.

Just differant.

Libranet is a Debian-based (which means it uses the main Debian packages, not it's own Debian-compatible ones, which is a huge difference; e.g., see Ubuntu) distro for the slightly more technical user. It's not nearly as slick or focused on hand holding as SUSE or Mepis or Xandros or Linspire, which is neither a good or bad thing, depending on your needs. For me, the stability, Admin Menu, & community are big pluses for Libranet; however, the distro is now so ridiculously late, and the guys that own Libranet are so secretive and uncommunicative about the time tables & direction for the distro, that many are now leaving the Libranet fold & looking at other distros. The natives are restless, in other words.

I have high hopes for LN 3.0 when it is finally released, but I've been playing a lot lately with Kanotix (just installed it on a machine last night), and so far I am VERY impressed (in particular, automounting of USB drives works perfectly, which is a pleasant surprise). It's also Debian-based, but it's about as up to date as you could want ... and it's being released every few months. If LN 3.0 isn't the freakin' bee's knees after the loooooooooong wait (actually, it's the lack of communication that burns me more ... I can wait if I'm [a] told why, and [b] given a reasonable timetable), I'm switching to Kanotix ... unless I find something better. :)

Greetings!

It's getting close .... really it is
-------------------------------------
Beta testing of Libranet 3.0 is now wrapping up. The testers have done an
excellent job in helping us to test, refine and polish the new version. We
plan to release the download soon, followed a few weeks later by pressed
CDs.

As in the past, there will be a discounted price for existing registered
users of previous releases.

Libranet 3.0 looks to be the best release ever and contains many, many
updates and improvements over previous releases.

We will let you know as soon as 3.0 is available.
