That's odd... I'd trash the first copy of thunderbird and redownload
and install it. It may just be something funky in the original
download or install of thunderbird.

The only thing I had similar was installing Java on a debian machine
and when I linked the java plugin to firefox, firefox wouldn't open.
There is a second place that the java plugin is so I linked to that
one and it worked fine there was just something wrong with the other
file.
