Thanks for your help at Culpeppers. Wanted to let you know that the Compaq laptop with the fried motherboard recognized the modem and was ready but wouldn't dial in KPPP. Neither would the Xircom PC card modem.Tried both ttyS0 and ttyS1. Got no dialtone. However, tried an external serial modem and it dialed fine with LPPP and connected and pinged, but would not dial in KPPP. Setup had the same parameters. Don't have to understand everything. As long as the serial modem is connecting, will look for drivers for the Xircom pc card modem. Another wierd thing I noted with Compaq. The computer wouldn't start on Monday. And, like the Digital laptop, pulled the dead battery and it started ok with the adapter. Like I said, the certain thing about laptops is the uncertainty thereof. Tony
